Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a mixture of positional and geometric isomers of linoleic acid. It has a unique conjugated double bond structure (-C=C-C=C-) instead of the isolated double bond structure (-C=C-...-C=C-) of linoleic acid. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is mainly found in the meat and dairy products of ruminants. Microorganisms in the rumen of ruminants can produce CLA through a bio-oxidation process. Numerous health benefits have been attributed to CLA in experimental animal models including actions to reduce carcinogenesis, atherosclerosis, onset of diabetes, and body fat mass. The accumulation of CLA isomers and several elongated/desaturated and β-oxidation metabolites have been found in tissues of animals fed diets with CLA.
